Memorial Day started as a day to remember those who died in the Civil War. Andrew Barton Emery was a doctor who died in Russellville, Alabama while serving Union troops. His brother Elisha is my great great grandfather. Elisha and Eliza Emery’s sons Edwin Dallas, George Johnston, and Samuel Alexander Emery all fought for The Union. George drowned in the Ohio River and Edwin drowned in a troop transport off the coast of North Carolina. Samuel served in the Grand Army of the Republic and was sent home after he was wounded. Then he enlisted in the Navy and patrolled the Ohio River. He wandered around the country for 5 years after the war ended. He came home to Ohio and married my great grandmother. We have many veterans in our extended family going back to the Revolutionary War but Andrew, Edwin, and George are the only three who died while serving our country that I am aware of how we are related.
